28th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Vocation Awareness Sunday - October 11-12,2008

From the Pastor’s Pen!

I would like to offer my sincere thanks for the two successful parish events of the past month.

For the Welcome/Installation Mass, I would like to publicly thank Jean Dargis and the choir for the music and Alice Trigg for assembling such a fine reception.  Many visitors at the Mass and reception made an effort to tell me how well-planned the day was.  Perhaps St. Victor’s parishioners are used to fine liturgical music and smooth-running large receptions, but I assure you from personal experience that these are a rarity around the diocese. One of the other new pastors was present at the Mass, along with some of his parishioners.  They have now significantly revised their plans for his installation Mass and reception based on what they witnessed at St. Victor.

For the parish Fiesta, the bulletin could be filled with the names of all the volunteers who helped make this a success.  I will limit the names here to Bob & Juvy Butler, the Fiesta  Committee Chairpersons, and Alice Trigg, all three were omniscient and omnipresent during the weekend.  Another collective thanks goes to the school parents and parish organizations: the Fiesta could not exist without their large-scale involvement.

                                                                Fr. Michael Hendrickson

In Memoriam

Former Pastor, Rev. Monsignor Thomas F. Ahern died in the peace of Christ on Tuesday, September 30th.  Monsignor Ahern served as our pastor from 1973 to 1986.  He led the process of designing and rebuilding our present parish church after an arsonist fire. He always had a special devotion to our Blessed Mother and the Rosary.  Everyone is invited to attend a Memorial Mass for him here at St. Victor’s on Tuesday, October 14th, at 7:30 P.M.

$CRIP gift certificates will be available after Masses this weekend (except Sunday 7:00 and 8:00 A.M.).  Don’t go shopping or dining without it!  Time to start placing your holiday shopping/dining orders.

October – Month of the Rosary

October is the month dedicated to the Blessed Mother and the Rosary.  The Rosary is the beautiful prayer to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. In saying the full 20 decades, we are reliving the life of Jesus and realizing how much Mary was part of the joy and suffering He endured.  The Rosary brings us closer to God and gives us strength to persevere in doing the right thing.  Pray a daily family Rosary asking God’s help through the intercession of Mary, the patroness of our country.  Praying together would do much to unite families and help them to become more loving, caring and helpful to others.  Pope John Paul II had said, “The Rosary is a way of contemplating the face of Christ through Mary’s eyes.  I want to suggest therefore, that people, families and Christian communities pray the Rosary.”

REMEMBER The Rosary is recited Monday through Saturday after the 8:00 A.M. Mass.  Please feel free to join us!

PILGRIM VIRGIN STATUE VISITATION – Would you like to have the Pilgrim Virgin statue visit your house?  One of the Legion of Mary’s works is to propagate the praying of the Rosary by bringing the Virgin statue to families who request it.  For more info and/or to request the statue, please call The Parish Office @ 251-7055.

SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH OF CARONDELET “WOMEN OF HEART” EVENT

With the 1883 opening of St. Patrick’s School in Oakland , the Sisters of St. Joseph began their service to residents of the Bay Area.  In 1895, they founded St. Joseph ’s Home for the Deaf and in 1909, they established Star of the Sea in San Francisco .  Eventually, they began teaching at St. Thomas Apostle in San Francisco and a number of Schools in the East Bay , Peninsula and the South Bay .  As their ministries evolved to meet critical needs of the times, they continue to leave their imprint as innovators in education, pastoral care, parish ministry and also social services directed to addressing the needs of the homeless, abused, challenged and imprisoned.  In recognition of their humble dedication, please join in celebrating, “WOMEN OF HEART,” Saturday, October 24th, Contra Costa Country Club.
