Stained Glass

3rd Sunday of Advent - December 12-13, 2009

THERE WILL BE A SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND FOR THE POOR.

THESE FUNDS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO SEVERAL OUTREACH PROGRAMS.

A CHRISTMAS TREE BLESSING.  Holy Creator of trees: Bless with Your abundant grace, this our Christmas tree, as a symbol of joy.  May its evergreen branches be a sign of Your never-fading promises.  May its colorful lights and ornaments call us to decorate with love our home and our world.  May the gifts that surround this tree be symbols of the gifts that we have received from the tree of Christ’s love.  Holy Christmas tree within our home, may joy and peace come and nest in your branches and in our hearts. Amen.

Memorial

St. Victor’s Altar Society would like to express their gratitude to the family who donated monies in loving memory of  Carmen, Conrado Sr. and Jr. Rosal. It will enable us to beautify the Church at this special time of year.

SOCIAL JUSTICE NOTES...

EASTSIDE F.I.S.H. food collection is next weekend.  Please bring your non-perishable food donations (peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, canned fruits & vegetables, etc.) and place them in the box in the vestibule of the Church.  Thank you.

EASTSIDE F.I.S.H. HOLIDAY NEEDS.  With the holiday season approaching, EASTSIDE F.I.S.H. could use donations of turkeys, chickens, or hams.  Please keep us in mind when the grocery stores are having their promotions.  If you can help, please call the Rectory Office @ 251-7055.  To those who have supported us during the year - MANY THANKS AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU!

NEEDY FAMILY. There is a family in need of a refrigerator.  If you are able to help, please call the Rectory Office @ 251-7055.

Parishioners are invited to take a tag from the GIVING TREE in the vestibule representing a needy child in our parish community.  Please purchase a gift and return the gift unwrapped with the tag attached, to the designated box in the vestibule.  [The tag is the only way that our volunteers have of identifying the family/individual. The tags also indicate sizes for clothing; however, if you wish to purchase another type of item, please feel free to do so.]  Please return the gift by the designated date of Friday, December 18th, so that our St. Vincent de Paul Society volunteers have time to sort, box and distribute them to all of the families before Christmas.  (Please return the gifts during the weekend Masses only!)  Also this year, because we are assisting so many families (70), our St. Vincent de Paul Society could use a few “extra hands” to deliver the gifts.  If you are able to help, please call the Rectory Office @ 251-7055 ASAP.  THANK YOU to our parishioners for your generous support during the Thanksgiving holiday food drive as well as your monetary donations.  You did much more than provide food for those in need. You shared the love of Christ in a very practical way through the donations of your time, talent and treasure.  A SPECIAL THANK YOU to our St. Vincent de Paul Society volunteers for the care of our needy not only during the holiday season, but also throughout the entire year.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES PROGRAM:  The Donation Station welcomes donations of household furnishings and items, clothing, diapers, backpacks and bicycles.  To volunteer at the station, or to donate items contact [email protected] .

Thanks To All

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to all those who are still faithfully fulfilling their Catholic Foundation and ADA payments for the year.  Please mail payments directly to the appropriate address, as they will soon be closing their books for 2009.

KUDOS to Our Lady of Guadalupe Society, our Vietnamese Association and Sister Noreen and our priests for helping to make our Advent religious celebrations during the past week so special. THANKS to all those who supported the Layette Shower, St. Victor’s Boutique and the Carmelite Boutique last weekend. A ROUND OF APPLAUSE to Chuck Gullo and the Knights of Columbus for helping to “clean out” the storage areas in the Church.

SOME OF THE MULTICULTURAL CHRISTMAS SEASON CELEBRATIONS

Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday that celebrates family, community and culture.  Celebrated from December 26th through January 1st, its origins are in the first harvest celebrations of Africa from which it takes its name.  The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which means “first fruits” in Swahili, a Pan-African language, which is the most widely spoke African language.

Posadas - Christmas for Mexicans, in traditional home and rural areas, is a religious holiday.  It is a celebration of the nativity.  In order to prepare for the day of symbolic commemoration, they have the Posadas (an enactment of St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary looking for lodging, who were pilgrims going to Bethlehem for the census according to the Scriptures). This celebration is a novena from December 16th-24th with the 24th being the Noche Buena or Holy Night.

Simbang Gabi – a Filipino tradition, is a nine-day novena – Mass at Dawn to the Blessed Mother.  The novena begins on December 16th and culminates with the ‘Misa de Gallo” on Christmas Eve to welcome the birth of our Savior.  In some Churches, the panuluyan is reenacted, showing the effort of Joseph and Mary to find a suitable birthplace.

THERE WILL BE A SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND FOR THE RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS.

Your gift will help defray some of the medical costs needed to care for our elderly religious.  Most importantly, please remember in your prayers the retired women and men religious living in the Diocese of San Jose.
